Saturday Opera – Elisir d’amore (excerpts)

This season we return to start our Saturday Opera at 3.30 PM every saturday.

Welcome to the sparkling and popular comedy Elisir d’amore by Donizetti. This is an opera that Donizetti composed in collaboration with his librettist over a period of 14 days in commission from Teatro della Canobbiano in 1832. The production was an imminent success. It was popularly dedicated to the women of Milan, and have since been performed on opera stages around the world. Donizetti was a virtuous and prolific composer. Between the years 1816 until his in 1848 he wrote a total of 75 operas of contrasting character, both comedies and more dramatic works.

In this version we will get to know the young farmer Nemorino who is hopelessly in love with Adina, the city-girl. The more affluent Adina treats Nemorino with rejection, but is not completely uninterested. Nemorino is in despair and tries to come up with a solution on how he can make her reciprocate his feelings. The miracle doctor Dulcimara lands in the midst of these entanglements with his balloon, bringing with him remedies and mixtures of all sorts.

This performance maintains both the humorous and the dramatic elements in an unusually easy, playful and energic way.
